Maintaining a garbage disposal
What is a garbage disposal? A garbage disposal is a device which is located underneath a sink which is used to shred food waste allowing it to pass through plumbing. What are some of the benefits of using a garbage disposal? A garbage disposal can help keep the smell of old garbage out of your kitchen and garbage cans. A garbage disposal unit can be priced fairly high so it is a good idea to take care of your garbage disposal as much as possible to ensure its longevity. There are a number of things you can do to help maintain the condition of your garbage disposal. First and foremost, you should avoid putting any hard objects into your disposal. Inserting hard foods into your garbage disposal will eventually wear down the shredder blades rendering them dull, ineffective, and useless. Items that are really hard should be dropped in your trash can.
You should also avoid putting fibrous and starchy items in your garbage disposal. Both items can cause the drain to become clogged up. Fibers tend to get tangled within the blades of the disposal and will lead to the clogging of the drain. Starches can get thick and block the drain as well. You should never put banana peels, celery, corn husk, corn cobs, potato peelings, onion skins, or eggs shell into your garbage disposal. These items can be put into a garbage disposal at minimal increments. It is a good idea to cut them into small pieces at best.
If you’re going to be putting large items into your garbage disposal then it is a good idea to cut them into smaller pieces before doing so. For instance, the skin of melons should be cut into smaller pieces before they are put into your disposal. It is also recommended that you put each small piece into the disposal one at a time instead of cramming a large amount in all at once. You should also run cold water while your garbage disposal is on. Leave the water and the garbage disposer running for thirty to sixty seconds after the waste has cleared the drain as it still has a distance to go.
