Maintaining a garbage disposal, the Brussels plumber tips and advice section

What is a garbage disposal? A garbage disposal is a device which is located underneath a sink which is used to shred food waste allowing it to pass through plumbing. What are some of the benefits of using a garbage disposal? A garbage disposal can help keep the smell of old garbage out of your kitchen and garbage cans. A garbage disposal unit can be priced fairly high so it is a good idea to take care of your garbage disposal as much as possible to ensure its longevity. There are a number of things you can do to help maintain the condition of your garbage disposal. First and foremost, you should avoid putting any hard objects into your disposal. Inserting hard foods into your garbage disposal will eventually wear down the shredder blades rendering them dull, ineffective, and useless. Items that are really hard should be dropped in your trash can.

You should also avoid putting fibrous and starchy items in your garbage disposal. Both items can cause the drain to become clogged up. Fibers tend to get tangled within the blades of the disposal and will lead to the clogging of the drain. Starches can get thick and block the drain as well. You should never put banana peels, celery, corn husk, corn cobs, potato peelings, onion skins, or eggs shell into your garbage disposal. These items can be put into a garbage disposal at minimal increments. It is a good idea to cut them into small pieces at best.

If you’re going to be putting large items into your garbage disposal then it is a good idea to cut them into smaller pieces before doing so. For instance, the skin of melons should be cut into smaller pieces before they are put into your disposal. It is also recommended that you put each small piece into the disposal one at a time instead of cramming a large amount in all at once. You should also run cold water while your garbage disposal is on. Leave the water and the garbage disposer running for thirty to sixty seconds after the waste has cleared the drain as it still has a distance to go.

One more things, spring is here, and the next weekend looks promising, I’m going to take my kids to Paradiso – will talk about it more in my next post.

Drain Plumbing – 10 Effective Tips to Keep Your Drainage System in a Healthy Condition

A drainage system could be explained as a system, where all the drainage pipes meet and convey the discharge effluents and sewage (originating from within the building) to the sewer. A building drain, which is found above the ground, works on the normal drainage principles of waste removal. It helps in the safe and effective removal of sewage from all the plumbing fixtures within the building to the sewer.

Here are ten effective plumbing tips to keep your drainage system in a healthy condition –

1. Place a strainer or wire gauze over the drains in your bathrooms and kitchen, as this will prevent vegetable peelings, seeds, hair, cotton pieces and other debris from clogging the drains. Clean the strainer regularly.

2. Use mechanical methods rather than chemical methods to unclog a drain. Use of chemical drainers would corrode your metal pipes and damage them. Use domestic remedies for cleaning your drain safely – pour down one cup full of baking soda into the drain and this should be followed by pouring one cup of vinegar because this home remedy is capable of removing even the most stubborn clogs in the drain. Keep doing this regularly every month.

3. Drains in your bathroom sinks need a little more attention – you need to pour down the drain two or three buckets of hot water every month to clean it of hair and other greasy products. It also removes odors, if any.

More tips about plumbing, as I add more pages here – please let me know if you want or need more advice and tips on home improvements…

Sometimes plumbing problems needed to be fixed as soon as possible. This is true when the problem is a clogged drain. There are a number of ways to fix a clogged drain. The method you will need to use to fix the clogged drain will depend on how bad the drain is clogged. Some people will allow their clogged drain to become worse and worse by leaving it untreated. After use the drain will become more and more clogged. The worse a drain is clogged the harder it will be to unclog the drain. With this understood, you should realize that is it a good idea to fix a clogged drain as quickly as possible.

Unclogging Drains

The first thing you should determine is how bad your drain is actually clogged. Is it clogged up completely? It is unusable? Hopefully, your drain is just moderately clogged. If this is the case then you can try using a homemade drain cleaner to unclog your drain. You’ll need half a cup of baking soda and a half of cup of vinegar. First, start by pouring half a cup of baking soda down the drain. Then follow it up with the half a cup of vinegar. Be as careful as possible when pouring these two ingredients down the drain because they can foam up and fume. It is a good idea to cover the drain a little after pouring the ingredients down the drain.

After pouring the two ingredients down the drain allow them to set for around three hours before running water. If the drain is clogged because of grease then you should try another concoction. Try pouring half a cup of salt down the drain followed by half a cup of baking soda. The finally pour a teakettle full of boiling water down the drain. Allow the drain to sit overnight after pouring this mixture down it. Hopefully your drains will become unclogged. If you are still having problems then you might have to purchase a professionally designed drain cleaner to help unclog your drains. The best thing to do is to treat your drains as soon as you realize that they are becoming clogged.

By Allison Ryan Platinum Quality Author

Practically all municipalities with populations of more than 2,500 maintain systems of sewage disposal consisting of a sewage treatment unit of either activated sludge or filter type and a system of sewers installed below the streets by which the raw sewage is conveyed to the disposal plant or unit.

In recent years health authorities have realized more than ever before, that the source of drinking water must be protected against contamination caused by the discharge of large volumes of domestic and industrial sewage into it. With the aid, in some instances, of federal grants, this phase of sanitation has progressed rapidly within the last ten years.

The installation of public steam enclosures doesn’t necessarily involve a plumber. Residential steam showers and steam rooms, however, are a new field into which he may easily be fitted. As far as the installation of public sewers and disposal units is concerned he does not play a very active part.

The work, especially that of constructing concrete and vitrified clay sewers, usually is done by semi-skilled labor or by workers trained in this field. The plumber does, however, use the public installation as a terminal for private plumbing systems, and it is quite necessary that he should be familiar with the public system, at least to the extent of being well-informed.

It is quite essential, too, that he know the various types of sewers and the principles involved in construction and operation of a modern disposal plant. There are three types of public sewers, each classified according to the kind of wastes it is required to handle.

Combination public sewers are the oldest variety of the three types of sewers and they are required to carry storm and sanitary wastes to some safe terminal. These sewers are obsolete, but still make up a large part of public sewage systems. Rain water should be carried to some terminal not associated with the disposal plant, because large quantities of water affect operation and necessitate an exceptionally large installation to handle it.

Water from your bathroom, from either the toilet or the bathtub can go here. Bathtub paint tends to cause some problems with drains so make sure you keep up with glazing.

Sanitary sewers are those which are required to carry domestic sanitary wastes only. All rain water must be excluded from them. The terminal of these sewers is a modern sewage disposal plant. Combination and sanitary sewers generally are placed about ten feet under the street grade and usually are found below the center line of the street.

Storm sewers are a comparatively new installation, made necessary because of sewage treatment. These sewers are made to carry only storm water and may terminate at any natural drainage area.

Although these are meant for large quantities of water, you cannot dump water from your swim spa or hot tub, because the hot tub chemicals need to be disposed of properly. This type of system drains into natural reservoirs and any water that did not come from the sky is contaminated.

Why You Shouldn’t Bathe Without Them
By J. P. Michaels

Shower head water filters? Why would you get one of those? Well believe it or not, more chemicals enter your body through skin absorption and inhalation of steam while showering than does from drinking the same water. Using shower head water filters, you don’t have to worry about all of this…

Most people are worried about the tap water they drink, but showering in the same water can even be worse for your health. Since chemicals have a much lower boiling point than water does, they vaporize into the air even before the water hits the ground. So not only do all the chemicals end up in the steam you breath in, but it’s WAY MORE CONCENTRATED with chemicals than the water could ever be- up to 50 times more concentrated!

Did you know that our society used over 80,000 different synthetic chemicals? Unfortunately, most of these end up in our tap and well water systems. The Ralph Nader Research Group conducted tests and found that there were over 2,100 toxic chemicals in the tap water system that caused cancer. That’s right, CANCER. All the more reason why shower head water filters are so important.

Synthetic chemicals are not the only thing in water that causes cancer either. Many experts believe that chlorine significantly increases your chances of having cancer. In fact, it’s been said that it’s because chlorine and synthetic chemicals are so prevalent in the water system that cancer and heart problems have increased so dramatically.

Back in the early 1900s before synthetic chemicals were overused and chlorine was used as the prevalent disinfectant agent in water supplies, 1 out of 50 people got cancer. Today, as many as 1 in 3 people (1 in 2 men) have cancer at some point in their lifetime. To me, it was obvious to get shower head water filters in my home for this reason alone.

And the worst part about breathing all of these chemicals and chlorine into our lungs is not only do they irritate the lungs and even cause asthma and bronchitis, they also go directly into your bloodstream and have magnified adverse effects. The kidneys and liver don’t even get the opportunity to filter them out like they would if you were to ingest them orally.

The use of shower head water filters can remove over 99% of all the chlorine, chemicals, and other impurities in your water and assure that what you and your family are bathing and breathing in is safe, healthy, and pure.

We’ve got one on each shower head in our house and they really are amazing. The water smells better, looks better, and even feels better on your skin. If you’ve even been in a pool before, you know how chlorine always dries out your skin and hair. Using shower head water filters, this isn’t even a concern anymore.

You can learn more about the shower head water filters we use in our home and how you can make sure that the water you and your familiy showers in is safe and pure for less than 25 cents a day by visiting my website listed below

How dangerous is tap water for showering? Not many people know this, but showering in contaminated water is more harmful and dangerous than drinking it! And here’s why….

When we take a warm shower, the pores of our skin open up and allow high levels of chlorine and other chemicals to be absorbed. Most of us are aware of how easily the body absorbs chemicals through the skin. The nicotine patch is a good example of this- but now, imagine the rate of absorption in a warm shower and over the entire surface area of your skin!

On top of this, a warm shower creates steam, which is where all the chemicals in water end up. Since chemicals vaporize at a lower temperature and higher rate than water, they all end up in the air we breath even before the water hits the ground. It’s said that the steam can contain more than 20 times the amount of contaminants than the actual water does! No joke!

Shower safety is even worse when chemicals and chlorine are inhaled because they become a strong irritant to the tissues in our lungs, and can even cause asthma and bronchitis. And since these chemicals go straight to our lungs, they go directly into the bloodstream, which dramatically increases their adverse effects. Drinking this same tap water orally at least allows the kidneys and liver to have a chance at removing most of these contaminants.

It’s been recently discovered that using chlorine as a disinfectant in tap water supplies poses many health concerns and threatens shower safety, especially when inhaled and absorbed through your skin. The biggest concern has been the role of both chlorine and synthetic chemicals in cancer diagnosis.

How dangerous is tap water for showering? Skin absorption and inhalation of chlorine and these other chemicals has been linked to many types of cancer including breast cancer and bladder cancer. In fact, when looking at the fat tissue of women with breast cancer, they have about 50%-60% higher levels of chlorine byproducts than tissue from a women without breast cancer. As much as 2/3 of the harmful exposure to chlorine and these other chemicals comes while we shower.

And we all know what chlorine does to our skin. If you’ve ever been in a swimming pool before, you understand how dry it makes your skin fell. Amazingly, the limit as to how much chlorine can be use to disinfect tap water supplies is 3 parts per million (ppm). You know what most pool kits say is unsafe to swim in? 3ppm!

So in conclusion, how dangerous is tap water for showering? A lot more dangerous than people think, that’s for sure. All I know is that since we can’t control the chemicals that we breath in or what chemicals are used to grow and manufacture our food, it only makes sense that we control what chemicals and other contaminants we drink and shower in.

To assure both drinking and shower safety, my family and I have installed point-of-use filtration systems on our kitchen sink and both showers. This way, we never have to worry about the dangers that come with consuming tap water. And it’s not even expensive to do either; in fact, we only pay pennies a day to assure the safety and well being our our family.
